Night walk

Go into the jungle in the evening. We follow a stream and because there is water here all year round, this is a good place to see frogs. Every tour is different, we never know what we are going to see.

Hiking and swimming

You can walk and swim independently in the area. Have a look at the church and the elementary school of Dos Bocas and visit the river. Summer is the most suitable time to go swimming in the river, we will explain to you where to go. Go for the refreshing swim and enjoy the surroundings you probably have for yourself. If possible we can also go to a small waterfall about three kilometers from the lodge. You can look for small poison frogs and during the rainy season there is enough water to swim there as well.

Eco Termales Quepos

Within walking distance are the thermal baths of Eco Termales Quepos. There are five baths with different temperatures and there is access to the river. Here is also a small restaurant where casados are served, you can go here for lunch and dinner. The entrance is 3500 Colones per person.

Nature reserve Hacienda Barú

The Hacienda Barú nature reserve is about half an hour’s drive away, just before Dominical. There are several tours and activities to book but the reserve can also be visited independently. Check the website for more information.


A small, touristy surf village with several restaurants and other facilities. Every day there is a tourist market and on Friday there is a farmers market.

Nauyaca Waterfalls

A popular day trip: visit the waterfalls of Nauyaca. The waterfalls are hidden in the rainforest and you get there with a walk of four kilometers if you go by car. From the bus stop it is six kilometers.


The Pacific coast of Costa Rica has a number of beautiful beaches. The beach of Dominical consists of pebbles, just like the beach of Playa Dominicalito. Playa Linda is a favorite among locals. This is a sandy beach, just like the beach of the village of Matapalo. There are also some small restaurants here.

Waterfall Poza Azul

Visit the small waterfall Poza Azul, for example after a visiting Playa Dominicalito. Accessible for free and in the rainy season you can take a refreshing dip here.

Whale watching

In the months of December to February and from July to September you have a chance to see the humpback whale off the coast of Uvita. Book a tour before, during or after your stay at Calathea Lodge.
